Progaming perspective - RTS in the US ? $comment_count ?>
Blizzard-Gaming has published an article titled "Progaming in the USA" that takes a look at the state of Professional RTS gaming in Asia compared to the US. It is an interesting look at the "other side" of online gaming.

The author goes into some depth about present RTS competitions (especially Gamefixx), and some historical competitions including names which will sound familiar to Quake players, like WCG and i2e2. There are several quotes from some of the top players from the US.

It used to be the case that FPS players could at least take some satisfaction that outside of Asia, FPS gamers were the real stars, but I think things may have shifted... considering the top CS players in the US, X3, made less than $10,000 each in 2001, and there are apparently a number of RTS gamers who have done much better. Is it a permanent change? Only time will tell. One thing is for sure, things will only get better. Read more.

Just so people know, WarCraft 3 is a pretty cool game. Have yet to test it out fully, but so far it has been nice. The low unit upkeep is a big change (usually it was 200, now it's 90), so you won't see those llama BGH 100 units vs 100 unit battles. BORING! :) Also with heros, you need to do more micro, which is a good thing.

Oh and, to compare, Grr... makes $100,000 easy every year from playing StarCraft, doing shows (yep, there are a lot of pro gaming only channels there!), and other "pro sport" stuff. He even had a few commercials if I am not mistaken. Yeah, Korea > NA big time, there is no comparison.

Culture also plays a big role. Here it's sort of looked down upon if you play games by Joe Shmoe - especially if you play a lot of em. Korea? Your a hero and sign autographs, etc.

But Agent, you're a hero and you sign autographs, don't you?

Hero, yes. Autographs, not really. But I can send you one for a "small" fee :)

Also, what is the highest amount any team has earned (in one tournament) in CS? Also, CS = 6v6, right? Or is it 8v8? So take the total and divide to see the amount per person. I bet it's not that much, not even close to Quake 3 (when it was in its prime). Speaking of which, is CS the only money game these days? I hear RTCW is getting some, but how much? I could be wrong, but it seems like nothing has progressed since Quake3 was kicked to the curb the the CPL.

i'm really looking forward to wc3. it seems like they really have addressed most of the issues that made me dislike rts games. getting your economy up then building a huge military while expanding constantly is not my idea of fun unless it's on a small scale. 90 units compared to 200 total is a big difference!

WarCraft III is a smaller, more boring SC with heroes and creeps. If you multiply the amount of units you usually have in WCIII by 2 you get StarCraft without the required skill of mass unit micro, which (except for newbies) is much needed to win a game of bw. If you watch good games, sirs, you will never see an elite Zerg user send 36 hydralisks into battle and leave it at that. He microes them. Away from storms, fakin' out zealots, hittin' tanks first, etc... conclusion: WCIII <<<<<<<<<< BW
