More on the 16 Player Duel Tournament Test this Saturday:
Doors are open from 9:00, the tournament starts at 10am and will run until approx 11pm.

Check out TOURNEYS for the full information, including the location at Western Suburbs Leagues Club in Ashfield. The address is 115 Liverpool Road, Ashfield. A map is available in the "Venue" section (click on TOURNEYS and then "Venue") - trains are very close by. Entry is FREE, spectators are absolutely welcome. The venue has bistros, a bar, and so on. Naturally enough, I won't be able to update this site until Sunday night at the earliest, but we should have some great demos to share with you.

First Rounds (Seedings Secret):
Grey sent me the info on who is in which Round, and who is playing who during the morning session, but he asked that I keep the seedings he used a secret so that no-one will argue with how he determined it. OK, I can see the point of that ;-).?

Player Profiles:
Want to find out a little more about these Players? We have collected some profiles for you and posted them up in the TOURNEYS section under "Players". Just click on "Players" there (on the toolbar in TOURNEYS) and then click on any of the names which are hyperlinks (not all the profiles are done yet).

Among some of the things they tell us are their answers to the question: What would you like to see at a Quake duel tournament?

  • Alchemist: Lotsa nice looking women :P hehe
  • Faust: Me winning and lots of naked women. MMMM nitro girls.
  • Mallanox: Me winning, Me on my own computer, ummm Thresh losing, a punch up, defintley FREE FOOD to all players..
  • Reload: LOVE to see an organised duel tornament that ran on scheduel :), with exceptional players and prizes :P Which i know this duel tourney will have :)
  • Tim: People having fun
  • Traydogg: Well so far it appears that Seer and Hoony are doin what I think is the ideal Duel comp. I think however you should have spectators and the spectator screens well AWAY from the competitors. ahh well just a thought
  • Webby: A fair format. I don't think double elimination with 1 map played per match is very fair. I'd much prefer to see best-of-3. However i do understand this would take ages to complete, so it's not really feasible. Oh, and QW is for Internet Play Only!!!

Prizes:
Yes, there are prizes, but they are more symbolic given that the tourney tomorrow is a test. A cheque for $150 to the winner and $50 for the runner-up - a bit of spending money.

Tonight's 1-on-1 Demo - Ser vs Reaper:
Most nights this week we've featured a special international demo to get you in the mood for the tourney tomorrow. Tonight it's the last night - who shall it be? Thresh? Lakerman_of_SC? Perhaps an Australian? Well, we hope to bring you some great Aussie demos after the tourney, tonight we have a real gem. It's a true DM4 Duel God - Ireland's Ser (POV, 9) playing [CT] Reaper (6) on DM4, dmm1 with Quad on.

This demo was recorded at the Irish Quake Clan League '98, and is I believe the final game where Ser wins the Irish Duel Gods competition, a really cool comp that was run by EWJ a while back and which inspired me to create the Challenge-au Invitational. This is a great example of Ser in action, against a very tough opponent in Reaper. I particularly loved the head on the ledge, see if you can spot it. Download and enjoy srvreapa.zip now.

Thresh on Quake2:
Check out Thresh's latest article, which makes some good points about the gameplay of Q2. Thresh finds Quake2 too slow (compared to Quake it's positively boring); he doesn't like those "clop, clop, clop" footsteps (which ruin many smart plays); and he doesn't like whatever it is that gives Quake2 it's laggy feel (compared to Quake). Amen. Games that aim for too much realism would do well to consider these points. I would like to add three points of my own. Muscle-bound cartoon coneheads, purty lights and balanced weapons - they don't compare so well to the Quake guy, DM2 and the sound and fury of the rocket launcher.

Also, on Frontline, the results of a vote on NQ vs QW - on LAN, NQ wins through.

Portuguese:
Brazilians speak Portuguese - (I wrote this 100 times on the blackboard today :P). Thanks Marie =).

Cheating:
One last word on that subject, after hearing from a Player who had some valid points I want to say that there is a distinction between "light" and "hard" cheating. "Light" cheating would include the use of hacked gl mdls (bright grenades that you see in the dark), whereas "hard" cheating would involve hacked maps etc. The continuum might look something like this:

cheating continuum

The long list of possible cheats I mentioned last night are available sometimes on NQ, sometimes on QW, but the latter does have stuff built in to detect the more serious hacks. I want to say that I am assured that top Players who use fullbright skins and stuff pretty much stop there, and a lot don't even use things like that. Some won't even use the crosshair!

I don't want to moralise on this subject any more. Opinions are like assholes (everyone has one). The good news is, that Players you know by name, play often etc, and who have a rep, are likely to be trustworthy. They'll most likely play by whatever the accepted standards are. It's only an advantage to use something like bright skins if you're the only one using them (on a dark map like DM2). What's "right" and "wrong" is defined by common consent. If everyone uses bright skins, it becomes "just the way we play the game".

Now that the Quake world is getting to be a smaller place, I expect that we'll slowly move towards a commonly accepted set of standards for what "tricks" Players can use without gaining an unfair advantage. Like most law, it is likely to be based on precedent and to evolve very slowly. International law, in particular, is very hard to agree on for obvious reasons. Whose law should become the international standard? Mine? Yours? According to the moral relativists, an observer from another culture cannot say you are "right" or "wrong", because they are basing their judgement on a different culture (namely, theirs!).

Put simply, there are no simple answers!

More on the 16 Player Duel Tournament Test this Saturday:
Still waiting on GreySeer for those Player listings and seedings :(~. The set-up for the Duel Tourney is all looking good, though. All systems are go.

Tonight's 1-on-1 Demo - [AC81]Guitarman vs [BKRM]Monk3y:
As promised, each night we'll feature a HOT Duel demo to get you in the mood. Tonight we have something really special, Malaysia's [AC81]Guitarman (POV, 13) and [BKRM]Monk3y (4) on DM4, dmm1 with Quad off.

Guitarman is Malaysia's top Player, and you can see why. This is a really good game, and you can also tell that both Players are having a helluva good time. Something particularly interesting about this game, is that you see a lot more tricky stuff, sneaky stuff, hiding, ambushes, surprise attacks and so on, than in most battles on DM4. Maybe this is the style they play in Malaysia. It's nice to think that different countries will have different ways of playing the game. Download gvsmdm4.zip now.

Brazilian Quake:
Spoke with iX-Stealth last night briefly on ICQ. He sent me some URLs to Brazilian Quake sites. Although they're all in Spanish, it is immediately clear that the Brazilians have a big Quake scene going. The web sites are also very well constructed (unlike Hoony's home-made hack work). I'm hoping to hear more about Brazilian Quake soon - this is the country which everyone knows excels at soccer, but did you know that Brazilians are now making a big impact on the world surfing scene? I have no doubts their national team will be extremely competitive in Quake also :-).

Check these links out:

Cheating in Quake SUCKS:
Go read ClanScene to understand the degree to which some Players will go to gain an advantage in Quake. Common to them all is reducing reliance on your own skill.

The cheating debate thing got a boost in Europe recently after Sujoy commented on his return from the Cybergate Challenge on the number of hacks and patches he saw some of his opponents using. As usual, Sujoy was incredibly diplomatic about it. Check out Methos for some info on this.

It seems that, in addition to fullbrights, water-hacked maps, hacked maps with holes cut in the walls, invisible skins, one-colored backpacks, one-coloured maps, hacked eyes, rl and lg models, some Players use proxies with timers (for the powerups) and location gadgets. There is a proxy available which now times weapons and armour, HeKSeN tells us. It will probably tell you when to scratch your ass in the next release.

HeKSeN reports that, thanks to the leadership of some Players like DOOMer, Xavier and the NBI guys, there is a move back towards fair gaming in Quake over there. If it's not solved, the game is undermined from within, especially online.

Turning off the v_kick default settings, which the Aussies until recently seemed to define as a "no-no", has been allowed back into the huge Aussie LAN I98, in part because it seems the rest of the world plays with them turned off. Bah.

Personally (and, like, wtf do I know) I think it makes the game really dumb-ass to turn them off. It's like turning the bass off on your stereo so that your bones don't rattle when you turn the volume up. It's like walking round in life wrapped up in a huge cotton-wool bud. V_kick makes the game more realistic, and ADDS depth of feeling to the game. But that's just my view. Like I said, wtf do I know.

Just recently I heard about some client-side commands that you can use to find out where your opponent is on the map and what health/weapons they have. There's another command, apparently that works if you are on a listen server, where you can adopt a "spectator view" and see through some walls.

Finally, you can just let a bot play for you. In Quake2, you can apparently use a bot to aim for you every now and then (i.e. not all the time). Anybody watching just thinks you had a lucky shot with the railgun. In Quake, with an aim-bot you can dramatically increase your effectiveness. A weaker version of the same principle is those Quake configs where the LG and shotty are set so that they automatically aim at your opponent (rl is always best left with noaim). When an opponent is in the air, in particular, the LG set this way will toast them every time.

If you use any of this shit, no matter that you may be a good Player, you can never tell. How much do you rely on these crutches?

EarthQuake has Shifted:
Received word from Shivan that the Dutch Quake-site "EarthQuake" has moved! The new address is http://earthquake.xs4all.nl/.

More on the 16 Player Duel Tournament Test this Saturday:
Apparently the staff at the Western Suburbs Leagues Club are getting excited themselves about the event. Carl, the Functions and Catering manager is a keen Quake Player, as is Judy, the Head Payments Mistress, and Chris, the Financial Controllers Accountant .

I was talking to Kerrie, their sales Rep, and she told me that the Bar is likely to open about 4:30 in the afternoon. There are a few rules that you should read over and take into account:

  • Any person entering the Club who lives within a 5km radius of WESTS is required to become a member. Social membership is $5. (Luckily, I believe everyone lives more than 5 kilometers away - bit of an odd rule)
  • A current WESTS member can sign in a guest who lives within the 5 km radius.
  • Guests who live outside the 5km radius of WESTS are NOT required to become a member, however are still required to sign the visitors' book.
  • Guests under the age of 18 must be supervised by a parent or guardian (just ask an old git if you're really worried ;-)
  • The stairs are unlicensed, so don't take drinks up or down them, or on them ;-)
  • No smoking in the tournament area
  • Under 18's can't go anywhere in the Gaming areas, but anyone can go to the Bistro and Club buffet restaurant

Nothing too difficult there. If you have any questions, just and I'll answer them. On the day, feel free to ask the organisers stuff - they'll be easily identifiable. I was hoping to post the seedings tonight but GreySeer is incommunicado so I guess that'll have to wait until tomorrow night.

Tonight's 1-on-1 Demo - Xenon vs Sujoy:
As promised, each night we'll feature a HOT Duel demo to get you in the mood. Tonight we have something really special, Sweden's Xenon (POV, 21) and England's Sujoy (11) on DM4, dmm1 with Quad on.

Xenon is regarded by many as a contender for top 1-on-1 Player in the world. This demo provides support in abundance, as he wins playing one of the world's best duellers under a ping disadvantage. To my mind, Xenon is the smoothest Player - he makes this game on DM4 look easy, always in control, despite the fact that he's moving lightning fast, always staying one step ahead, of a Player who is always only half a second away from staging a major comeback. Amazing stuff. Check out xenon_vs_sujoy_dm4.zip now.

Impulse 98 LAN Registration is Open:
It's up - the new Impulse 98 website for the biggest and best-run Quake/2 LAN in Australia. Check out http://impulse98.playnow.com.au/ for all the details. Well done guys, it's looking great :-).

EURO WDT Tournament:
The Europeans are apparently continuing to develop the concept of a EURO WDT, with the Swisscon and Qday people looking into things. It's been a bit quiet over the last couple of days, but the idea is still very much alive, I have been assured :-).

One of the issues, it seems to me, is whether the Europeans are going to organise one huge event or several important events around the continent. It's kind of a regional version of the "Regionals" idea. I think once we've seen if Ignatu has secured his sponsorship (and job) or not, the Europeans will kick into action. I am told, however, that regardless of whether or not a US WDT is created, Europe will organise some sort of pan-national EURO tournament.

16 Player Duel Tournament Test this Saturday:
It's definitely ON - if you're a Player, please keep an eye on your emails and in particular please help GreySeer out by coming nice and early (especially if you are bringing your machine). Your support is REALLY appreciated :-). If you are a spectator, please come with an open mind and bear in mind that it IS a test.

This means all of us: you, me, and the machines, are going to try this format out and take a real good look at what works and doesn't work. Your help on the day is always welcomed, your feedback and suggestions would be very cool :-). Feel free to get involved! The whole idea is to discover how to make such an event rock - remember, if we get it nailed then we can build from a strong foundation. It's important to show our sponsor, Village Roadshow, that 1-on-1 Quake can kick some serious arse :-).

The website details will be updated tomorrow night - with the Seedings and some other info. You can check out what's there now.

South African Quake - ROCK IT:
To get you in the mood for ROCKING 1-on-1, Challenge.AU is going to feature some HOT 1-on-1 demos for the remainder of this week :-).

First up, we are incredibly proud to introduce South African Quake to the world community. Chenome (POV, 20) and [DC]Vertigo (14) rock in this very cool demo recorded in DM4: CvsV.zip.

If any evidence is needed that we need a Tri-Nations with SA, NZ, and AU, this is it. Damage Clan are regarded as the strongest in SA. Chenome justifiably can be proud of putting SA "on the map" with this great game. Thank you goes to Chenome :-).

Z Victorious over SK:
As well as the international played between the two national teams of Finland and Germany on Sunday, the two most famous teams of each country also met. Clan Z from Finland is widely regarded as the most serious challenger to the position held by Sweden's Clan 9. The last time these two met, in June 1998, the result was a very close 283 to Sweden and 259 to Finland. Since Clan 9 had the advantage of playing together in a room at the Nine Studio, many observers have wondered how Z would fare if they were also able to play in this way.

On Sunday, Clan Z had another opportunity to play a top European Clan in the form of Germany's Schroet Kommando. The SK guys represent another first division national side, and the clash was a big one. Florian sent in this match report:

"E1M2 DMM1 TP2 was the first half and Z started very good jumping to an early lead and controlled the YA/GL/Quad area. Then Kane managed to grab a Quad and cleared GL and YA but then killed himself trying to frag a Z at YA. Nevertheless the game was more open from there on, Z couldn't increase their 40 frag lead anymore the last 10 minutes the result 144:98 as far as I remember. Cable and I think it was Crunchy played outstanding.

The second half was DM6 DMM3 TP2, SK had the better start, leading by 20 frags in a very short time. Then it was a typical DM6 game with none really able to control the RA area, the scores were tied at 87:87. Before the halfway mark, Therion made a good showing, managing to hold RA for some time and with 10 minutes left SK had equalled the overall score leading by about 50 frags. But then Z started a great comeback steadily closing up the gap, with 1minute left they tied the game, then won 309:294.

Overall I have to say that it was a very good and close match (could have gone the otherway round as well) by two extremely skilled clans both surely top 5 in the world. No wonder that Z nearly beat 9, I also think like Griff that Z is even stronger than 9. (He said that to me already months ago). It would have been nice to see them clash in their "homemap" DM2 but as you know, Griff wrote the reason for that not happening on the Schroet Kommando -hp.

I tracked Therion and Kane in the second half and made a demo which probably will be posted on SK's hp soon".

Cybergate Challenge:
A couple of weeks ago, in mid-August, the Cybergate Challenge took place in Aalborg, Denmark. Apart from everyone having a helluva good time, some great matches were played involving [DC]Sujoy, [sk]Metzgerr, [CW]Insane, [CW]Arcane, Quietus, Blaze, Warlock and Deemac. A really enjoyable match write-up can be found written by [CW]Insane at http://clanscene.quakenet.eu.org/articles/cybergate/.

Among the many cool things you can read about there are the secrets of Sujoy's setup: FOV 90, no crosshair, and manual weapon selects and the wonders of Metzgerr's shafting: "He can't do that!! That's not possible!!!". This is a really good article and highly recommended.

Team Internet

[sk]Metzgerr has also got some piccies up at http://www.starbase.de/pics.htm so check those out too in order to put faces to the names.

Last but not least, Sujoy.com has more reviews and demos of some of the really great games that were played there.

The League #8 + 50 Danish Clans = 5#8+KABOOM:
Also saw on ClanScene that Sweden's huge 1-on-1 League is about to enter it's 8th season, while almost 50 clans are involved in the Danish Quake League which is starting up again. That's 241 Players in the Danish Quake League. EUROQuake, yeah!

Malby Reviews Rainbow 6:
Saw over on Quake.AU a cool little review of Rainbow 6 by Sean "Malby" Malloy:

"I have to aggree with iMMoRTaL on this one. There is just WAY too much to Rainbow 6.. Sure, commanding a team of guys is one thing, but plotting their entire course of action, throughout the whole level, and THEN playing the game? Gimme a break.. I played that puppy for all of 30 minutes. You know what was most fun? Setting my guys up into sexual positions, and then putting bullets in their heads for not conforming to the moral standards of the rainbow operations type dealy thing. The death scenes are very cool when you shoot a teammate right between the eyes.. 5 stars for that!".

Methos had this to say: "Aside from the fact that it installs over 2100 files and more than 100 directories, the game just sucks. :)". You know what? That's a bummer - but it makes me realise how lucky we all are to have Quake. Got my fingers crossed for Q3 Arena and Half-Life to bring the Q1 and Q2 tribes back together again. But I believe Quake can live on even so - it's THAT good.

WDT Write-Ups:
HeKSeN has written quite a bit if you'd like to hear the full story of what happened on Sunday night, and Coerj has also written up his perspective on things. HeKSeN captures the mood everybody felt well with this saying:

"...to my relief Ignatu raised his head and came back onto IRC, much to my surprise as i could imagine the huge pressure on his shoulders. He had realized that he would tell the people the truth, a truth that was as surprisingly to some as not to others. Ignatu simply didn't have the time for this event and continued apologizing that he was deeply sorry he ever involved himself in this BIG project with no job or income for his house and food. I think everyone was feeling sorry for Ignatu - I was - but at the same time we were all aggresive, as he had brought us so far but now it was all over, nothing to do, nothing to say, we could just stuff up our organisations and go "well, that was fun!".

Thresh also has some observations to make on his revamped Gamers Extreme Frontline site. I see Thresh has a really nifty Poll up which allows you to vote on QW vs NQ and view the results in real-time.When I checked, there had been 111 votes, with 39% voting for QW for LAN and Internet, while only 33% voted for NQ foir LAN and QW for Internet. Very cool.

Thresh agrees that the only way to solve the QW vs NQ issue is a vote, and asks that ppl be willing to accept at least some compromises in order to get the show on the road:

"We, as a whole, are breaking new ground and laying some groundwork for future tournaments to come -- so let's break out of the mold, open our minds a little, and get this tournament under way".

It would seem that everyone is now waiting to hear from Ignatu again. Meanwhile the Europeans are quietly considering their options. It's a good chance for all to stop and have a think on it for a bit.

Message Board is Buggy:
Many thanks for those ppl who have sent in emails with error messages they are getting from the new MB. I have forwarded them onto Dunno - he was at home today. It should be fixed up tomorrow, sorry bout any inconvenience to you.

Monday - Night, August 31, 1998
Finland Victorious over Germany:
Vekotin sends word that on Sunday Finland beat Germany in two internationals played on Death32c, under dmm1 with tp2, with powerups, on qw 2.21 - scores were FIN 586 - GER 205, and FIN 470 - GER 245, for a total of FIN 1076 - GER 488. Match descriptions, screenshots and demos can be found at http://clans.vekoduck.com/klaanikeskus/finger_uk.html.

Well, that's a pretty convincing win - congratulations to the Finnish national team, who cement what is already an awesome reputation for playing Quake :-).

World Deathmatch Tournament in Europe?:
Whatever they decide to call it, the Europeans seem likely to create some sort of supra-national organising body for multinational LANs. They were very quick to take up the baton Frank dropped on Sunday night, and it's a good thing that the concept of the WDT is being kept very much alive even if the organisational side is almost back to square one.

Certainly, the Europeans are damn fortunate to live in a part of the world where they have fast Internet connections and comparatively cheap travel to foreign LANs (though I hear in some countries the price of a BigMac is a bit steep). One of the main reasons they love QW is because they do a helluva lot of Quaking online. National boundaries disappear when you live in Finland and ISDN costs the same as 33.6 in relative terms.

With a large number of LANs going on, such as QDay and SwissCon, there is a very real possibility of some rather large team-based international tournaments taking place without too much extra difficulty. The question is, can they bridge the gap to making such a tournament a spectator media event that will be broadcast around the world and lift FPS gaming to a new level? I think this is the kind of stuff Frank had in mind for the WDT.

The Euros were at pains to reassure other countries present at the IRC meeting that they intended to organise a WDT, and not just another European tournament. But even the latter, if successful and on a large enough scale, would represent a huge leap towards a true WDT.

From what I have heard, it looks like the Euros are currently deciding where the tourney will be held and who will organise it. They seem likely to soon call an IRC meeting to democratically determine the rules and settings. In the meantime, Frank could still announce that he has found a backer for his plan. It remains to be seen what would happen at that point.

Greek Quake Players - Quake Gods?:
Heard from GR-[LeGeoN] that the Greek Deathmatch team would very much like to set off a rocket under the feet of other friendly Quake playing countries out there:

"Hiya.. a msg from the Greek Deathmatch team .... yes we play quake as well :] ( The GoD of "DM4 frantik-fragging" probably lives on Olympus and frags the hell out of the 12 others all day! :) The GR-team would love to come to the WDA, but like our spanish friends we have sponsor problems as well :( It is a shame so many countries are going and we can't be there to play with all you dudes.. :( I am sure it will be fun.. We do have some last hopes... in some ppl here.. and if they manage to pull it off we might be able to come. Anyway.. if we don't manage to come... have a great time and good luck to everyone!! GR-[LeGeoN]".

Where were the Americans?:
Why was Frank on his own? D2-B2 dropped by, but did anyone else come?

Bring Out Yer Babes:
Methos has gotten damn close to getting laid recently, is there any way we can help him out?

"I have a new "Quake babe"" picture to post tomorrow. These have become fairly popular since I posted the pictures of Morticia, Bitchy, Lava Goddess and of course Zoid. :)".

Web Board:
Nightwing tells me that the webboard doesn't work for him. This happening to anyone else? Please so I can get Dunno to see what's happening. Meantime, for other ppl it seems to be working fine.

Quake vs QuakeWorld:
It's like religion, see? The purists quote the sacred texts ("Quakeworld is for Internet only"), while the wise ones cite the Seven Reasons (eg "our teams will be practicing online - what else should we use?"). As far as I can tell, the QW proponents think QW is a more advanced form of Quake while the NQ proponents think NQ is purer on LAN. How can both sides be right? Surely ONE side must be wrong? Or is it possible that BOTH sides are wrong? Could both sides be RIGHT? Or is one side half-right, and the other is three-quarters wrong?

The argument cannot be resolved, imho. Einstein could not prove it one or the other way (apparently he was a huge fan of the Lightning Gun). We should not expect the argument to go away either. It will go on and on and on and on. The only solution I can think of is to have ready a process to quickly come to a decision each time it rears it's head - a vote, or a random choice - something. In the meantime, it will always provoke debate and argument, sometimes destructively, sometimes very entertainingly.

Q2CTF:
Don't normally carry Q2 news, but Dru emailed me to say that:

"Clanring combined with the ICR forces are holding a Q2CTF tournament called Fragmented. The url is http://fragmented.mpog.com. It is to be run much the same as the past Clanring tournaments but this time on a different platform and a different mod. Registration is started now and ends after 64 hpb and 64 lpb clans have signed up for the event".

Frankisms:
Here are some more classic quotes:

#1...Democracy is not always the best choice for things...especially anarchistic democracy

having votes and discussions via email or IRC are not a reasonable way to come to decisions about things.

If there were to be a World Tournament, it would be best to set the rules, and then ask those who wanted to participate to join in

#2...The decision to have a World Tournament is up to you

On Sept 7, or sometime thereafter, I am talking to a company about their interest in pursuing something like this

if they decide to do this, I will set some rules, and we will see who we have to contact as far as teams or organizations in the various countries

if they decide not to do this, I'll simply take a pass on World Tournaments

It's just not reasonable for me to work 12-14 hours a day, then to face another 4-6 hours on World Tournament issues

it would be a different thing if this company is interested, and I will consult for them to organize a tournament

I apologize for raising the fever on this only to bow out now, but I want to do this now, rather than continue with a charade

if this company wants to do this, I will likely set rules, and contact various people, maybe companies and not individuals in each country, and get them involved

It appears that Frank would like a job from his mystery sponsorship company to organise the world tournament, and if he gets the job he will determine the rules etc and then contact countries about sending teams. In fact, he might deal with companies from each country rather than Quake ppl.

Why didn't he just do this in the first place? Who knows, but my guess is that he actually would prefer to do it through the democratic IRC way - with country reps and all the rest - why else would he have initially suggested it and got us all heading down that path? Something happened to change his mind... Some sort of reality, brick wall thingy...

I'm Broke:
Through the incredible noise of some 50+ international quakers on IRC reacting to the collapse of the first organising meeting by the WDT country representatives, Frank "Ignatu" Cabanski explained why he made the decision he did:

I made a personal choice, just today

the way we were voting...the job would have gotten accomplaished

and it would have taken about 1 hour

I am broke

if you will pay my rent on Tuesday, I'll gladly continue for another month

it has to do with time, and effort

time and effort I should be spending working

because I made a mistake

I have been thinking this almost from the start

I kept saying to myself that I couldn't give up

that it was wrong to quit

Duck, old enough to know that admitting a mistake and fixing it is better than continuing on with it

it's not a QW/NQ issue

it's a ME issue

Well...who wants to replace me?

my ability to be involved with this, in this way, is at an end

If anyone wants to take over organizing a world tournament, email

on the 7th or 8th of Sept, I will be talking to someone re: a World tourney...a company...if they back it, I will be back on board. I didn't want to simply delay until then. It would have been better politically, but less honest, I feel.

I'm sorry

*** US-Ignatu () has left #wquake

Frank needs to pay the rent, and until the sponsor comes through he has some urgent priorities. I'm going to bed now (it's 2:30am) - it was an amazing night and a strange way to meet many of the Quakers I've heard about. The Europeans have picked up the ball, and if they can pull their collective resources together they can probably do it.

I don't know what the chances of Frank's mystery sponsor coming through now are, but we'll find out I guess in 10 days.

Message Board:
On the toolbar to the left is a new link - MB - to a message board here at Challenge.AU. If it falls down pls bear with us and we'll fix the problem and get it back up asap. The author is Hankin Chick, a Quake Player at www.consult who goes by the nick "Dunno". He's a talented guy, and whipped this MB up himself. Cheers, Dunno :-).

Not sure how the MB will go, it's something of an experiment. Please treat it as a forum to discuss any stuff you want - WDT stuff, international Quake stuff, AU Team stuff, whatever. Let me know if there is anything you think we could do to improve the design and so on.
